Clay Sewer Laterals Under Clifton, Northside and Westwood

Updated 2026-10 · Cincinnati, OH

Three neighbourhoods, one pipe

Clifton's big houses on the hill above the university, Northside's frame houses on steep side streets, and Westwood's long blocks of 1910s to 1950s brick and bungalows have very different streets and the same thing under the front lawn: a vitrified clay building sewer, laid in short sections, running from the basement to the public sewer in the street.

Clay is a durable material. What ages is the joint between each section, and the ground around it. Hillside lots move, slowly. Street trees planted generations ago have roots that follow moisture to every joint that has opened by a fraction of an inch.

How each one tends to fail

Clifton

Mature trees along streets like Lafayette Avenue and around the Gaslight district mean root intrusion is the classic call. Laterals can be long where houses sit well back from the street.

Northside

Steep lots and older, sometimes repaired, laterals. Offset joints, where one section has slipped relative to the next, catch solids and cause repeat blockages.

Westwood

The city's largest neighbourhood has a huge number of houses of similar age, and roots plus sags are both common. A belly that holds water will keep blocking even after the roots are cut.

What to ask for after the line is cleared

  • A camera inspection from the cleanout to the public sewer, with a copy of the footage
  • The distance from the cleanout to each defect, so you know whether it is under your yard, the sidewalk or the street
  • What each defect is: roots, offset, sag, crack, collapse
  • The company's honest view: schedule clearing, repair a section, or replace

Clearing on a schedule versus repair

If the footage shows sound pipe with roots at a few joints, clearing every year or eighteen months is a reasonable, cheaper choice, and many Cincinnati owners live with exactly that. If it shows sags, offsets that catch solids, cracks or a collapse, repeated clearing becomes the expensive option and a repair, a liner or a replacement is cheaper over a few years. Remember that the private building sewer is yours the whole way to the public main, including under the street, and that MSD may repair breaks in a public easement or right-of-way, so check with MSD about anything past your property line before approving street work.

Line blocked again? Call and a local plumbing company can clear it and camera it in one visit.

Buying an older house

In these neighbourhoods a sewer camera inspection is a standard part of a sensible home inspection. It costs a few hundred dollars. The pipe you inherit runs to the public sewer, and its replacement can cost well into five figures.

Where to go next

Common questions

Why is my sewer line clay?

Clay was the standard material for building sewers when most of these houses were built. Many are still original.

Do root killers work?

They can slow regrowth after clearing but do not seal the joint, so roots return. Only repair, lining or replacement closes the joint.

Can a clay lateral be lined?

Often, if it still holds its shape and has no severe sag. Lining needs the line cleared and inspected first.

Does the city own the tree whose roots are in my sewer?

Street trees in the tree lawn are often city-managed, but the pipe is still yours to keep clear. Ask the city's forestry office before cutting or removing a street tree.
