Contact
Calling is quickest, especially if water is coming in. The form works too, and either one goes to a local plumbing company that covers your area.

If water is coming in right now
Close the main shutoff if it is clean water from a pipe; it is usually in the basement on the front wall by the meter. If it is sewage from a floor drain, stop using water in the house and keep away from anything electrical. If it happened in rain, report it to MSD within 48 hours as well as calling here.
What helps on the call
- Your ZIP code, which decides who covers you
- Which fixture or drain, and which floor
- Whether it started during rain or on a dry day
- Roughly how old the house is, and whether the basement is finished
- A photo, which you can send after the call
What happens next
The plumbing company calls you back on a timescale they set and that depends on how busy they are; on a big storm night, every plumber in the city is stretched. Some questions get answered on the phone, including, sometimes, that you do not need a plumber yet. If the job needs a visit, they arrange it and quote. Your details go to that one company, not to a list.
Calling from a rental
Renters call too, and that is fine. Tell the plumbing company you rent, and tell your landlord at the same time, because most repairs to the building's plumbing are the owner's to authorise and pay for. If sewage came up during rain, a tenant can report the backup to MSD in their own right; MSD's program covers tenants as well as owners, and your own renter's insurance details go on any claim.
Calls are recorded
Calls to this number may be recorded, and you will hear an announcement saying so before the call connects. Recordings are kept so a job is not misremembered later. If you would rather not be recorded, use the form instead.

Common questions
Can I just ask a question without booking anything?
Yes. Whether a slow drain is a branch or the main, or whether a backup should go to MSD first, can often be settled in a short conversation.
Do you answer at night?
The lines are staffed during the hours shown. After hours, whether someone answers depends on the plumbing company's on-call schedule.
Can I send photos?
Yes, after the first call or form. A photo of the drain, the pipe or the water heater label often saves a visit.
